It felt like it rained every day this winter.
Then, in the final week of August, the sun came out.
I went for a walk with my dog through the university grounds, and we found ourselves at the back of a building marked for demolition. It is not really a single building but a network of connected buildings, all set to be torn down. During my undergraduate years, twenty years ago, I would sit in this spot with a little notepad, writing down ideas for songs I wanted to compose. I remember writing an idea for a song about a clock that used the ticking of a pendulum as a rhythmic device.
Anyway, on this recent sunny day, I set my phone up and filmed the empty, overgrown courtyard for twenty minutes. I imagined some songs that could accompany the scene, much like I did twenty years earlier. These four tunes are the result.
